HORTIKULTURA FILIPINA 2018: A CULMINATION OF THE SCIENCE AND ART OF TAKING CARE OF PLANTS

Dear Dreamers
Upon visiting a new place, the first thing that I appreciate is the scenery and the greenery. A lot of places here in the Philippines are bustling with plant life but our city scenery lacks such greenery. Other cities in the world have beautiful plant life and our city would benefit from having the same.

More plant life means fresher air and a lovely scenery, I recently found a gorgeous place right in the heart of Quezon City. Filled with gorgeous greenery and made even more beautiful, the Tropical Garden Area was lined with cacti and succulents as well.

There were works of horticulturists displayed such as the forest style bonsai with a Muslim Mosque ruins shaped stone.

My favorite among the horticulturist’s work was the huge bulb brimming with plants, it feels as if I am peeking into a different world.

WHAT IS HORTICULTURE?
Horticulture is about the science and art of taking care and growing plants. The Philippine Horticultural Society, Inc. (PHSI) told us that having a green thumb is nonexistent as growing plants in a sense simply requires knowledge on how to take care of said plants.

WHY HORTICULTURE?
Horticulture is not simply a hobby, it too can become a business. Depending on the plant life, some plants can sell for thousands of pesos.

WHAT IS PHSI?
Philippine Horticultural Society, Inc. is a non-stock, non-profit organization of plant lovers interested in spreading their passion and enthusiasm for plants. It endeavors to be the lead organization in horticulture, be it for food, medicine or aestheticism, in the Philippines. Throughout the years, PHSI has managed to bring organizations and people together to educate and collaborate on horticultural techniques and practices including traditional farming.

FOOD
After hearing about Horticulture, we were treated with sumptuous food such as pancit with kamias, tempura banana blossom, turon with macapuno, ashitaba ice cream, kamote iced tea and sampaguita iced tea. I absolutely loved the food! I heard that members of the Philippine Horticultural Society, Inc. enjoy these food during monthly meetings. How lucky!
