JUGO BAR
Back then, Jugo Bar was one of the many newly opened restaurants at Katipunan. Craving to try something new, we ventured to try out the alluring and cozy little diner. Judging from first impressions, Jugo Bar appears to be a vibrant diner, dabbling in the retro days of the 80s and the modern hipster vibes.
Armed with ingredients in mason jars and neon lights, their bar area looks like a haven for Instagram peeps.
Excitement filled us when we saw the interesting offerings such as the hokkaido burger or the 12-inches burger. However, as we were about to order, disappointment washed over us when we found out more than half of the menu was actually unavailable.
Why drink your milkshake in the milkshake glasses of old when you can drink them in mason jars?
An interesting find would be their bacon overload milkshake (P105). It was our first time trying such a drink and it was surprisingly good.
The first few sips of the 16 oz. Sea Dust Caramel milkshake (P105) or salted caramel milkshake were okay but it got harder and harder to finish because it was salty and heavy on the tummy since it was made from soft serve ice cream.
I was unable to finish my salted caramel milkshake so I went ahead and requested a takeout container.
Price-wise, the basket of six chicken (P160) might be the optimal choice rather than the basket of three (P100) and basket of nine (260 pesos). Their chicken in a basket is served with either 100g of fries or rice.
We went with the honey sesame with ranch dip since I usually go for honey mustard dip when it comes to tenders. Their chicken is actually boneless, I thought they were offering chicken parts and not tenders. The breading was okay, the meat was well cooked, leaning to towards tenderness and definitely not overcooked.
Funny thing with the cheese burger steak bowl (P120), I actually thought it was a burger in a bowl. The patty was well seasoned and despite the thickness of the patty, it still turned out well-done.
Since the hokkaido burger was unavailable, I decided to order something close to it, the Japadog (P180). The Japadog consists of Hungarian sausage, Samurai sauce, Japanese mayo and seaweed, it comes with 100g of fries as well. I liked the bread and the hotdog had bits of chili.
Jugo Bar can be found right across Ateneo, near Regis Building and right beside Hot Star. More specifically, they are located at the second floor, 318 Dela Rosa Street, Loyola Heights. Occasionally, you can spot these cute dogs waiting for their master outside the building.
For some strange reason, as we were leaving, there were two people who came and ordered the same thing as we did minus the milkshakes. What we ordered must probably be a few of the diner’s best-sellers. Oh, and our bill was delivered in a cute little striped pail.
